INTERVIEW: A conversation with STYX keyboardist Lawrence Gowan.

Lawrence Gowan, the dynamic and talented keyboardist with the band sticks, will be joining John Waite, along with Foreigner, to the IThink Amphitheater this Friday, July 19th for their big summer tour.

Gowan Took time out of his busy touring schedule to talk with Rockbandreviews.com. Here is that conversation...

Rockbandreviews: Lawrence, thank you for taking the time to chat with us. Let’s start with your musical journey. How did you become a keyboard player, and what led you to join STYX?

Lawrence Gowan: It’s a pleasure to be here! My musical journey began in Scotland, where I was born. I moved to Canada at a young age, and my passion for music blossomed. I started playing piano and honed my skills over the years. In the late '90s, I had the incredible opportunity to join STYX as their keyboardist and vocalist. It was a dream come true for me, and I’ve been with the band ever since.

Rockbandreviews: has an impressive legacy. Can you share some highlights from your time with the band?

Lawrence Gowan: Absolutely! STYX is known for its harmony, chemistry, and balance. We’ve always pushed ourselves creatively. One of our recent triumphs was the album “The Mission,” released in 2017. It’s our 16th studio album and a concept album that tells the story of the first manned mission to Mars in 2033. The album challenged us, but we’re incredibly proud of it.

Rockbandreviews: Exciting! And what about upcoming material? Are there any new projects on the horizon?

Lawrence Gowan: Definitely! We’re always working on new material. In 2021, we released “Crash of the Crown,” along with an EP called “The Same Stardust.” These albums continue our musical exploration and keep the STYX spirit alive. Fans can expect more from us in the future!

Rockbandreviews: pandemic hit the music industry hard. How did STYX cope during those challenging times?

Lawrence Gowan: Like everyone else, it was tough. We missed performing live and connecting with our fans. But we adapted. Now, in 2023, we’re back on the road, playing shows for the faithful fans who’ve supported us throughout the years. It’s exhilarating!

Rockbandreviews: Lastly, any message for aspiring musicians or keyboard players?

Lawrence Gowan: Keep playing, keep learning, and stay true to your passion. Music has the power to unite people, and it’s a privilege to be part of that magic. And who knows? Maybe one day, you’ll find yourself rocking out on stage with a legendary band like STYX.

Thank you, Lawrence, for sharing your insights and inspiring us through your playing and music.
